Review: Knog Bilby 400 Headlamp

Just when you think a product has reached its apex and can't be further improved, along comes some small, innovative company and proves you wrong. Such is the case with the headlamp, which hasn't changed much in the last decade—until now. The Knog Bilby 400 ($72) constitutes a complete re-evaluation: the sleek, one-piece silicone body holds a fully independent lamp insert that pops out for re-charging. (It should be admitted here that the wrap-around silicon does look a little goofy; but remember, so did old-school headlamps when we all first switched over from our Mini-Mag flashlights two decades ago.) The Bilby's seven different light modes range from full-on 400 lumens to downward-directed 10 for reading. A host of other virtues make this headlamp supremely versatile: lightweight and comfortable for distance runners; a red light and streamlined, snag-free design for hunters, anglers, and climbers; and a variety of beam widths for hikers, bikers, backpackers, and campers. All in all, this is a product that you'll want to buy two of: one as a gift for a friend or loved one, and one for yourself, so you don't seethe with envy.
