Review: Breakwater Supply Halocline Shoe

Fall weather is unpredictable, and so when navigating Montana’s varied landscapes, a good water shoe is indispensable. I keep a pair in my truck at all times, swapping out from my hiking boots when it rains or when a stream crossing is in order. The Halocline Waterproof Shoe ($80-$100, depending on size) from Breakwater Supply keeps my feet dry in shallow water, and warm in deeper water—the neoprene material works like a wetsuit, allowing the water inside the shoe to warm up. An elastic lacing system draws tight with a quick pull, and releases with a quick pinch. The tacky outsole grabs both dry ground and wet surfaces without slippage. What’s more, the Halocline sticks to snow and ice, too, making them suitable for year-round use.
