Review: Mazama Rimrock Hip Pack

Picture this: you’re out for a long ride on another hot, dry day. You reach for the hose on your hydration pack to get a drink, and ice-cold water comes pouring out. Just last year, I never would’ve dreamed of this experience, but now, thanks to Mazama’s new insulated water reservoirs, it's possible even on the most sizzling summer afternoons.

I went with the 1.8L Lumbar Insulated Reservoir paired with Mazama’s Rimrock Hip Pack to try out while biking. Right off, I noticed their extensive attention to detail with this pack. It’s extremely functional and seems to have been designed with real people in mind. From the little things like a magnetic retainer to keep the hose secure, to the big details like their strap-stow system that keeps the pack snuggly in place, Mazama thought of everything. I especially like the pack’s padding and ventilation, which keeps my lower back less sweaty compared to other hip packs.

All in all, this pack is a great option for bikers, hikers, or runners looking to get the weight off their backs and more centered on their hips. The water reservoir seems to hold more water than other pack options, thanks to its unique shape. Plus, of course, the water stays much colder throughout the day. I’ve found that oftentimes, after putting ice in the reservoir when I’m leaving home, there are still some cubes floating around after a few hours on the saddle. And, on the hottest days of the year, cold water is nearly worth its weight in gold.
