Review: Bearbottom Storm Jacket

It's never too early to start thinking about spring—in fact, when you're shivering in subzero temps, that might be the best time, as it improves one's attitude immensely. And when I think of spring, I think of rain: frigid downpours that come out of nowhere to punish the unprepared. Which is why I'm also thinking about the Bearbottom Storm Jacket—a solid layer that's bound to be in my pack come April, on every hike, bike, and trail run I partake of from early spring all the way through autumn. The coat is lightweight & packable, has a streamlined fit, and stretches as my body moves, making it ideal for intense, all-day activity induced by months of cabin fever. The adjustable cuffs cinch down when it gets really wet, and three pockets—two standard front pockets plus an arm pocket for smaller items—offer just enough storage for the essentials. The contoured hood can be cinched down, too, and the collar comes up over the chin for protection from those icy spring winds. All in all, this is a simple, functional, and supremely useful raincoat that will keep me outside longer, and with a much better attitude, all season long. Old Man Winter, keep it coming—but when Fair Maiden Spring comes along, I'll be ready. Available at bearbottomclothing.com; $95.
