Review: Force DSL 3L Hydrapak
Back in the 1990s, my army platoon was issued the original Camelbak, which we all loved—no more canteens bouncing around our waists as we speed-marched along a roadway, jogged through the jungle, or rushed onto an enemy objective. Water bladders have become ubiquitous since then, but given the casual nature of outdoor activities in comparison to soldiering, they tend to be a mite too delicate for me. Not so with the Force DSL 3L ($53) by Hydrapak, which is “a rugged reservoir for big missions,” as the company calls it. Which is an apt description, as the Force DSL has a short, wide shape, meant for stuffing into any pack, bladder compartment or no.
The heavyweight TPU material rebuffs scrapes and punctures, while the welded seams endure inadvertent drops and other rough handling. An insulated, detachable drink tube boasts a burly bite valve with lock and dust cover, while a robust closure clasp includes a hook for in-pack stability.
Finally, a grab-handle allows for grasping with one hand—no more awkward fumbling with the pliable bladder body. All in all, this is a bladder that can take a beating, which makes it ideal for hunting and other activities that are hard on gear.
