Review: Dakine Universal Pickup Pad
Mountain bikes are expensive—ain’t two ways around that—which is why I’m awfully particular about how I get my bike to and from the trailhead. Now, if I bend or break something out on the trail, then so be it. But if one of my components gets busted up before I ever get in the saddle, then I’m going to be mad. Especially during the winter months, when good riding can take hours of driving to reach from my home here in southwest Montana, I need something more stable, sturdy, and secure than what a cheap, flimsy tailgate hitch bike rack can offer me. That’s why I use the Universal Pickup Pad from Dakine.
Depending on the size of your tailgate, you can choose either the large or the small option. The former boasts a seven-bike capacity, while the latter tops out at five bikes. Both sizes are usable with truck shells and tonneau covers, and they lock into place thanks to four burly cam straps across the bottom of the pad. The underside is made of soft, microfiber material as to not scratch up your paintjob, and the hitch handle cover is removable for compatibility with back-up cameras. Plus, there’s a pocket for holding extra hand tools, a metal gromet for a cable lock, and even a built-in bottle opener for your post-ride libations.
While I appreciate all these fine features, what I appreciate most about the Universal Pickup Pad is that it keeps my bike secure and that it’s easy to use. No longer do I worry about my bike jostling around in the bed of my truck, nor do I fear a wobbling hitch-carrier may send my most expensive piece of gear skidding across the highway. I’ll tell you firsthand, it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone who cherishes their bike.
Available at dakine.com; $384 for the large.
