Review: Outdoor Vitals Vario Jacket
I’m a man of layers. Maybe not emotionally, but when it comes to the outdoors, I’m packin’ some with me 12 months out of the year. I wear everything from my grandpa’s old Woolrich to fancy new Gore-Tex shells, and I can confidently say that no matter what kind of recreation you’re into, the Vario Men’s Jacket from Outdoor Vitals is worth considering. This compact and comfortable mid-layer is constructed with ripstop nylon and insulated with recycled fibers. Its armpit vents make it breathable, the zippered pockets are great for storage, and the hood keeps my head sheltered from the elements. But here’s the kicker: the thing weighs nine ounces. That’s only a couple more than an iPhone! And it’s not paper-thin, either. The fabric molds noticeably well to the body, making it both comfy and practical. I’ve worn it over heavy shirts and under thin shells, as well as on its own. Would I want to weld in it? Probably not, but when it comes to backpacking, climbing, running, boating, fishing, and biking—you betcha. Available at outdoorvitals.com; $210.
