Review: Chaco Paonia Clogs

When it comes to staying comfortable in camp, the Chaco Paonia Clogs are tough to beat, especially when the cooler temperatures of fall begin to trickle in. They have all the same features standard to the company’s classic sandal—a rubber midsole and rugged, lugged outsole—but with a waterproof suede upper for a little more warmth and comfort. A roomy toe box keeps them breathable, while nylon straps cinch around the uppers to keep the shoes firmly in place. Even with the straps tightened, though, your heels are free, so they have the feel of flip-flip more so than sandals.

In terms of functionality, don’t be fooled by the looks of the clogs—they’re as functional as they are stylish. As soon as I get back to camp or town after a day of fishing, hunting, or biking, these shoes are the first thing I put on. They’re great for gathering firewood, lounging around the grill, or meandering into the bushes to check out a cool frog or bug. I typically wear them with socks (a style that looks good around town, too), although one could be just as comfortable in them barefoot. Overall, the Paonia Clogs blend the best attributes of Chaco sandals and flip-flops with the comfort of closed-toed shoes, all in one svelte, suede package. Well done, Chaco.
