Tour de Hyalite
With the summer season coming to an end, autumn will soon impart its beauty in the environs of southwest Montana. In the midst of this amazing seasonal transition is the annual Tour de Hyalite, a combination trail running – rock climbing event held in beautiful Hyalite Canyon south of Bozeman. Locally organized and sponsored, the Tour is a great chance for participants of all abilities to test themselves in both the horizontal and vertical realms. “The Tour is sponsored by the Southwest Montana Climbers' Coalition, a grassroots organization of climbers that protects the heritage and future of Montana climbing,” says Tom Kalakay, SMCC director and former organizer of the event.
The event includes a 14-mile round trip hike/run to the top of Hyalite Peak followed by top-roped rock climbing at Practice Rock. Scores are determined by deducting climbing points from the running time. While intimidating to some, the Tour is not an overly serious competition. “In reality, the tour is for people of all abilities,” adds Kalakay. “It’s really just an excuse to get together for a hike and some climbing!”
The Tour de Hyalite takes place in October, with the trail run starting at the Grotto Falls Trailhead in Hyalite Canyon. Registration takes place the day of the event, so arrive early. The registration fee includes a tee shirt and permit costs, with extra funds going to benefit the SMCC general fund. Following the event is an after-party complete with a gear raffle.
