Maps: Forest Visitor

Google Earth is awesome, no doubt, and that fancy GPS of yours is not to be scoffed at—but there’s nothing quite like unfurling a map on the kitchen table and letting a world of adventure appear before you. And that’s exactly what you get with the new Forest Visitor Maps (USDA Forest Service, $10) for the Gallatin National Forest, Bozeman’s big backyard playground. Broken up into three sections—North, West, and Central—these detailed topos show terrain, elevation, trails, logging roads, land ownership, and all the usual national-forest destinations: mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and trout-filled streams. Campgrounds, cabins, and other landmarks are also included, but the major breakthrough in these maps is the multiple-use designation—recreation opportunities are indicated for hike, bicycle, motorcycle, ATV, horse, and other specific uses, based on the most recent GNF Travel Plan. you know not only where you to go, but what other kinds of visitors you might encounter. Available at all Ranger District offices as well as Timber Trails, Owenhouse Ace Hardware, and Northern Lights. More info at fs.usda.gov/gallatin.
