Review: Magna Electrolytes

Electrolytes have come a long way since Gatorade hit the scene back in the '70s, kicking off a hydration firestorm that has yet to burn out. Sodium is all the rage these days, which is great for ultra-endurance athletes; but there are alternatives in the marketplace focusing on other important minerals that enhance performance, increase energy, and expedite recovery. Namely, magnesium—and that's what you get in abundance with Magna. We passed a few packets around the office; here's what everyone thought.

Think back to chemistry class, and you might remember that your muscle cells require sodium, potassium, and magnesium to function. Magna has all three, with a particular focus on magnesium, which happens to have energizing properties as well. The lemonade-tea flavor is about the closest non-caffeinated thing you can find to Red Bull, and it’s a nice boost when on the mountain. —Eli

After a hard day of hunting, I mixed the lemon-lime Magna in my remaining water. While it's designed for daily use, I felt better after just one packet. My tired muscles felt energized and I was able to maintain my focus for the long drive home. Plus it tasted great. —Chris

I have never been a fan of electrolytes. They usually leave me with an upset stomach and taste too salty or sweet. After a long run, I gave Magna a try and was pleasantly surprised. I felt rejuvenated, stomach-ache-free, and there was no lingering aftertaste. Maybe electrolytes aren't so bad after all. —Jamie

I put a packet of the lemon-lime Magna in my water bottle before an elk hunt, and was pleasantly surprised with how apt I felt on the mountain. It was equally helpful the next morning, replenishing lost electrolytes from an evening of celebratory libations while abating my feelings of nausea and self-loathing. —Carson

Giving the body what it needs, before and after exercise, is important—which is why I take supplements, and why I avoid energy drinks loaded with caffeine and sugar. Magna gives me essential minerals, in the right proportions for my particular activities and level of intensity, while also providing a nice boost before an outing. It's unlikely I'll give up coffee, but otherwise I may have found a one-stop solution to both my electrolyte and energy needs. —Mike
