Review: Yakima Overhaul HD

As far as cargo racks go, there are loads (ha) of them out there these days. But the Yakima OverHaul HD System may just be the best. Here's why: it's built both tough (capacity is 500 pounds on-road, 300 off) and versatile. With its adjustable height, you can raise the rack for headroom and large-item storage, or lower it for fuel economy and garage access. It’ll carry anything, from watercraft to rocket boxes to rooftop tents. Burly hooks on the posts and tiedown points at the end of the crossbars make for quick and easy lashing.

Several crossbar lengths are available, and optional side rails allow you to turn the rack into an overlander, with attachment points for accessories like a shovel, jack, or water and gas cans. Installation is intuitive, although precise measuring is important for the best fit. No drilling required; the four towers clamp on, complete with security features so nobody can uninstall it in your absence.

All in all, this is one heck of a rack, from a proven name in the industry. Around $1150, including crossbars; yakima.com.
