Review: Duck Camp Contact Softshell

Spend enough time outside and you start to notice the drawbacks of different jackets. Puffies are warm but frail, vulnerable to everything from tree branches to campfire sparks. Work jackets are tough but inflexible. Fleece doesn't shed water, and parkas are bulky and loud. None of this bodes well for active days afield in rugged terrain and variable weather, especially when chasing game.

The insulated softshell, however, is the Jack-of-all-trades coat, and Duck Camp's Contact Softshell Jacket is among the best I've worn. The stretchy fabric moves with me, while remaining resistant to puncture, tearing, and the occasional errant ember. A DWR coating repels rain and snow, while the pit-zips allow heat to escape during exertion. Handwarmer pockets, a fleece liner, and a well-designed hood keep me warm & cozy when the temps drop or the wind picks up.

The Contact coat is a little on the small side, so consider sizing up. I'm 5'8" and usually sit right between a medium and a large; the large fits my torso just fine but is a bit slim in the arms.
