bird hunting dog walking on train track

Companions
As long as you have a dog to
be your companion you have
every reason to live a happy life

Stickeen
Just finished John Muir’s memoir of his adventure on
an Alaskan glacier—his companion a camp dog with a
mind of his own, saved from a fall into a crevasse by
Muir’s skill—eyes welled-up I see that no matter how
independent they sometimes seem they always need us
and we need to be there for their unconditional love

Autumn Morning
Sock-covered feet slide easily over the kitchen floor as a
coffee grinder’s whir announces the aroma to follow
Soft light changes imperceptibly in the window as slow-moving
thoughts begin to form and dissolve in the autumn morning
