Indoor Action

Classes & Courses around the Bozone.

Some of us dream about days of endless turns in deep fluffy powder, effortlessly gliding down a steep backcountry slope while the winter sun glitters on the fresh snow. But that’s just some of us. The reality for the rest of us is wheezing and lagging behind our friends, the sweat freezing every time we stop, and constantly estimating how many minutes until we get back to the car—back to warmth and comfort. Preferring the summer season is not a crime, but in a town chock-full of snow-obsessed ski bums, it might as well be. Summer lovers: if you’re out there, know you’re not alone.

Instead of begrudgingly agreeing to a daylong tour in a snowpocalypse with a minus-30 wind-chill, give yourself an excuse by signing up for an adult-education class. You can brush up on skills for your favorite summer activities or learn something completely new with some of our community’s best adult-learning resources.

Spire Climbing Center
Spire offers several options for climbers looking to advance their skills and knowledge base during the winter months. Take an Intro to Leading course for beginner sport climbers, or a self-rescue class to learn technical rope skills for rescue scenarios and safety during alpine excursions. Full details can be found at spireclimbingcenter.com/instruction.

Fly Shops
Our local fly shops offer instruction on fly-tying, gearing up, and more, plus women’s-only clinics. Keep an eye out for winter classes like the Beginner Fly Tying Class held at River’s Edge. Similarly, fly shops like Montana Angler, Gallatin River Guides, and Sweetwater Fly Shop often offer winter classes. Stop by your favorite shop to see what they’re offering this year.

MSU Extension
Montana State University Extension in Gallatin County will host the Level 1 Master Gardener class this winter at the Museum of the Rockies. The Level 1 Master Gardener class is intended for beginner to intermediate gardeners who want to be more successful in vegetable or flower gardening and to better understand yard and garden maintenance. Topics covered in the Level 1 Master Gardener Program include soils and fertility, plant growth and development, flower and vegetable gardening, planting and maintaining trees and shrubs, and an introduction to integrated pest management.

Adult Community Education (ACE)
For fans of variety and affordability, these classes are for you. ACE offers different courses every season. Featured on the schedule are active classes like clogging or yoga, art and photography classes, and language courses for when your outdoor adventures take you abroad. They run anywhere from a one-night clinic to a full eight-week course. For a full schedule, check out bsd7.org.

Emerson Cultural Center
The Emerson Cultural Center is not just the local hub for viewing art; it can be a place to make your own. Offering a variety of classes for every ability, you can take your new skills outside come spring. Visit theemerson.org for a full list of courses.

Various & Sundry Other Options
Keep your eyes peeled for flyers around town, and check out the Outside Bozeman Event Calendar (outsidebozeman.com/events) for additional classes and seminars. Bike maintenance, safety & survival, and other courses are hosted by outdoor shops and nonprofit groups all around Bozeman, all winter long.
