Winter 2011-2012 O/B Blunders

Every so often, our attentive and meticulous readers catch an oversight—a proofreading or photo-editing gaffe committed by overworked O/B staff after one too many Chuggles (see Fall 2011, p. 91)—that puts us, quite deservedly, in our illiterate little places. And it just so happens that one of these aforementioned accipiter-eyed Bozemanites identified an error in the last issue: an incorrect inclusion, to be precise, regarding an article about blue grouse—seems we ran a photo of a sharptail by mistake (Fall 2011, p. 28). Or did we? Turns out the grouse in question is a bluetail grouse, a rare crossbreed of the two species, known only in esoteric avian-observation circles. Says Ryan Kreuger, O/B photo editor, “I was pretty sure it was a bluetail, and the markings indicated a clear concentration of blue-grouse genes; I suspect around 63 or 64%. I checked my taxonomic supposition on the world’s leading grouse-identification blog, blueorsharpie.com. As usual, I was right.” “Usual” being the operative word—the photo credit for said bluetail should not have read “Jessica Lee”, but rather “Jess Lee”, a name more suited to the photographer’s actual gender.
