Review: Outlaw X Telemark Binding
A good binding should offer power, precision, and ease of use—and the Outlaw X Telemark Binding from 22 Designs delivers all that and more. This bad boy brings modern innovation to the timeless art of telemark skiing without losing the classic free-heel soul.
The step-in design is a major upgrade. Quick transitions? Check. Precision control on steep, sketchy slopes? Absolutely. The lateral control on these bindings feels like they’re reading your mind, and the durable build ensures they’ll take a beating and keep coming back for more. Add in the quick-release system for extra peace of mind, and you’ve got a setup built to handle whatever the mountain throws at you.
Coming from a 75mm boot and binding setup, I was a little skeptical about switching to NTN-style bindings. Would it feel different? Would I still be able to drop a knee with the same swagger? Turns out, the transition was smooth as butter. My muscle memory carried over seamlessly, and honestly, the midsole latch system on the Outlaw X makes the boot-to-ski hookup feel like less of a chore.
I know, I know—cue the grumbles from the 75mm purists. But listen, I’ll be the first to admit that this is better. The old mantra, “Free your heel, free your mind,” still holds true, and with the Outlaw X, it feels like 22 Designs has freed us from frustration, too.
Lightweight yet powerful, these bindings pack a punch right out of the box. That said, if I could go back, I’d spring for a couple of the optional add-ons from 22 Designs. The brakes and crampons specifically; and while you’re browsing their site, do yourself a favor and check out the Stiffy springs. If you’re like me and prefer a stiffer flex, they’re a no-brainer. Toss them in your cart—you won’t regret it.
The Outlaw X stands victorious in my book. I can’t wait to see what kind of designs they’ll dream up next, but for now, this binding is the gold standard for free-heel skiers.
