Review: Muck Apex Pro Arctic Grip

As a latecomer to the muck-boot game, I spent many a winter day with soggy feet. But to me, the dexterity of a normal boot made up for it—I wanted to be light on my feet, not clod-hop around like an overweight clown. But then the Muck Boots Apex Pro Arctic Grip came along—a lightweight, agile, grippy boot that requires no sacrifice when keeping one's feet dry. From the first time I slipped them on, I felt the difference—no more HFS (Heavy-Foot Syndrome) and no more slip-sliding in bulky water-busters that offer no off-trail traction. Indeed, the Apex Pro proved a do-it-all boot, leaving nothing to be desired.

These babies are tough, with a burly shin shield for impact-resistance and flexible neoprene around the sides and back for flexibility. The 12-inch height is just right for snow, muck, and shallow water, allowing full protection without overheating. And the Vibram sole grabs the ground like cougar claws, keeping me connected to terra firma in everything from dry snow to slick wet grass.

After several pheasant hunts along the river bottom and several more days schlepping firewood outside, I've been converted. Muck boots are for me, now, from the first frigid days of fall until the last wet week of spring. And until they fall apart, you'll find the Apex Pro on my feet.
