Fat Chance
Fat-bikers have a new winter home in Bozeman: Bohart Ranch. The cross-country ski center will open its 30-plus kilometers of trails to bikers for the 2014-15 season in response to the growing popularity of the sport. “We saw an opportunity for us and the biking community, because bikes aren’t allowed on some forest-service land,” says Bohart Ranch co-owner Jean MacInnes. Bohart will allow access to current season-pass holders on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3pm to close, pending trail conditions. “This is a trial run,” says MacInnes, “so we’ll have lots of oversight and be able to make changes where necessary.” After Bohart’s scheduled opening of December 5, the trails will be open to bikers (helmets required). So far, Jean doesn’t see any issues developing between skiers and bikers, and thinks the limited-use policies in place for bikers will work out amicably.
