An ingenious little camp stove that doesn’t cost a dime? Sign me up. Using a few simple materials, you can build a fuel-efficient “rocket stove” — an updated version of the tin can “hobo stove” used by generations of wanderers, survivalists, and backwoods campers.

Backpacking the Beartooth's Beaten Path.

Think a beaten path is for newbies and the unimaginative? Think again and meet the Beaten Path of Yellowstone country. “It’s a popular trail because it’s a beautiful trail,” says the USFS officer during a pre-hike visit to the Beartooth Ranger District in Red Lodge. Although, he quickly reminds me, “popular” in a southwest Montana Wilderness Area is a far cry from the intense crowds visiting the region’s national parks.

So I asked Will Caton, the owner of Swiss Fit, to explain why he has me doing certain exercises.

When floating the river in Montana, you need two things: watercraft and beer. (On occasion, a bathing suit as well.) Lessons from the Jim Bridger Run.

At the end of June, I raced in the Jim Bridger Trail Run. This was my second year in a row and a great test to see how my new Ridge Run training program with Swiss Fit Montana was working out. The run starts at the Sypes trailhead, runs across private land and up the Middle Cottonwood trail, and then back to Sypes. In all, it's 10 miles with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain—nothing to sneeze at.

As I prepared for the race, my goal was to improve on my 1:52 mark from the previous year. At the start, I was strong and felt I was hitting my stride as we got on the Middle Cottonwood trail. It was about three miles in when doubt started creeping in.

Basic equine safety.

One of the prettiest ways to see Montana is from the back of a horse – there's time to take in the views, stop and relax, and cover lots of ground without loud motors. With summer trail-riding upon us, and hunting season coming up, it’s extremely important to put safety first. Now, full disclosure: I'm not a trainer or expert, but I have spent the majority of my life on horseback, cowboying and starting colts. I've seen some hellacious wrecks and been in a few myself. I know how things can become dangerous in an instant. These are some basic tips for staying safe.

An unorthodox excursion at Ousel.

On Friday night, I sat at a friend's house sipping drinks when a longtime buddy walked in. I hadn’t seen Dylan since winter, and even then it was only for a day. After a few beers and a night’s worth of bullshitting, he outlined a plan to hit Lower Ousel Falls the next morning. My only commitment fell in the afternoon—he needn’t say more. At 8am the following day, we were joined by friends Ethan, Austin, and Izaak and headed down the canyon.

The hype behind climbing lingo.

Like all outdoor sports, climbing has its own jargon, and the terminology can be overwhelming. If you’ve ever been around a climber or hung out at Spire, you know what I’m talking about. In a given exchange, enough superfluous vocabulary is thrown around that a non-climber might comprehend half, at most. If you’re new to the scene, good luck keeping up. But fear not—the loudmouth spouting every piece of slang in his lexicon was at one time just as confused as you, and just because he can talk the talk, doesn't mean he can send the rock.

Ridge Run training with Swiss Fit Montana.

This year, I wanted to incorporate some new training strategies to meet my goals of improving my time and getting stronger, so as not to break down physically after my third consecutive Ridge Run. To achieve these goals, I started working out with Will Caton at Swiss Fit Montana.

During my first session, I was introduced to the exercises I’d be using. But this wasn’t a polite introduction—it was a full-on workout. Will took note of key areas to target in future workouts, such as my slouch, as it takes more energy to run when you’re constantly lifting your body up and down. I also needed to work on the oft-discussed core, and my glutes, a muscle group that according to Will, I'd need to build for endurance, climbing, and descending.
