Review: Gossamer Gear G4-20 Pack

If you're anything like me, backpack shopping can feel like a gamble. Sometimes you don’t realize a pack’s flaws until you’re deep in the backcountry. That was my reality—until the Gossamer Gear G4-20 came into view.

Weighing in at just 22.1 ounces, the G4-20 is an ultralight, frameless pack built for minimalist hikers. Despite its weight—or lack thereof—it carries impressively well. Its made from robic nylon, a lightweight and durable fabric that holds up well against abrasive trails and overgrown brush. I especially appreciate the roll-top closure, which gives you that little extra room when you need that one last luxury item. And then there’s the removable sit pad—a fantastic feature that functions as back padding while hiking and a cushy seat when you stop to rest.

For ultralight packs, the price point can often be a barrier. Compared to some of the $400 options on the market, the G4-20 delivers exceptional value without sacrificing performance. Whether you’re a first-time thru-hiker or a seasoned weekend warrior, this pack hits the sweet spot between budget-friendly and backcountry-ready. I recommend sizing down—while my measurements put me in the medium range on the size chart, I found the small to be a much more favorable fit.
