Review: FHF Bear Spray Lite Holster

Despite their simplistic task, not all bear spray holsters are created equal. Case in point: the Bear Spray Lite Holster from FHF Gear. This nifty holder is made from a strong, laminated nylon and military-grade shock cord—both of which will last through years of rugged use and abuse in the mountains. I was particularly drawn to the holster, though, because of its MOLLE compatible design, which allowed it to attach seamlessly to the hip belt of my Exo Mountain Gear hunting pack.

This spring, I tested out the setup on a weeklong shed-hunting trip, and on a handful of smaller excursions near the border of Yellowstone—a veritable grizzly Mecca come spring. The holster did exactly as advertised: provide easy access to my bear spray, however, I found the orange pull-tab that loops around the top of a can to be a hinderance in terms of deployment speed. After a couple close calls with grizzlies shed hunting over the years, I know just how fast these bruins can move, and just how valuable every second is. Thus, I ended up rethreading the shock cord to remove the tab and loop. Cinched tight, the new configuration is just as secure.

Modular, adjustable, and durable as all heck—that’s what FHF products are all about, and the Bear Spray Lite Holster is no exception. It costs $35, and is available at fhfgear.com, firstlite.com, or locally at the MeatEater store in downtown Bozeman.
