Review: Petzl Vasak

Fewer pieces of equipment, more adapters for different uses—that's the idea behind Petzl's latest crampon collection. The Vasak, for example, comes standard with a single binding system—either straps or bails, depending on boot type—but can be quickly swapped out with the other system (purchased separately). What's more, the front section can be swapped out for more technical terrain or vertical ice. What that means is a smaller kit in your closet and a smaller hit on your wallet. The stock Vasak is a reliable crampon for classic mountaineering, so if that's your thing, you don't even need to think about interchangeable parts. Either way, this crampon is lightweight, durable, and ready to take you up whatever snow-and-ice-covered mountain you've got your eye on. $160; petzl.com.
