Review: Peak Designs Outdoor Backpack

Landscape photography and trail running are my two favorite summer endeavors, but I've always had a hard time combining the two (running with camera equipment is a disaster waiting to happen). Enter Peak Design's  25L Outdoor Backpack ($250). Now, I don't have to sacrifice one for the other.

The frameless pack with a roll-top design strikes the right balance—small enough to stay secure without gear shifting, yet spacious thanks to its flex-fold dividers and side zippers. The pack is made with weather-resistant fabric, but Peak Designs also sells an additional Rain Fly ($30) should the elements really turn.

When combined with the size  "Smedium" Camera Cub V2 ($70), which is designed to fit perfectly inside the 25L pack, the backpack becomes even more versatile. I can secure the cube using the internal mounting loops, allowing me to move quickly without worrying about camera gear bouncing around.

For even easier access to the camera, though, consider the Capture Camera Clip ($80). With it, I can be hands-free while keeping my camera in easy reach. The clip mounts the camera to the outside of the bag—beside my shoulder or hip—so I don't have to stop and dig it out every time I want to snap a shot. The clip's attachment points were clearly designed for both user comfort and equipment protection.

For those of us who want to chase the miles and chase the light, Peak Designs seems to have cracked the code.
