Review: Elan Ripstick 102 Black Edition
Bridger skiers understand the utility of an all-around ski. Something well suited to an ever-changing mountain with varying conditions. Whether you’re floating through fresh powder on the Ridge or blasting through tracked-out chunder off PK, the Elan Ripstick 102 Black Edition is engineered for hard-charging skiers demanding performance across the entire mountain.
When I first took the skis out of the box, I couldn’t help but think they should come with a warning label like serious equipment often does: “Not a toy.” At least, not for bunny-hill skiers. These skis were created for those who want formidable horsepower out of their equipment. A carbon-reinforced core and unique profile deliver a feel in the Black Editions that you won’t find in the other Elan ski models. They also look downright mean—comparable to a chainsaw or a handgun. While I’m joking (mostly), there’s a shred of truth in that comparison.
Still, the Black Editions aren’t for everyone. They won’t inspire curious comments on the chairlift; they wouldn’t be the ski of choice for an AT uphill-downhill race; and you also wouldn’t grab 'em for a day in the park or buttery runs on the cat track. But for skiers who crave the elation of blasting hero lines in steep terrain, the Black Edition is a high-performance tool that knows no boundaries. Now I’m not saying you should duck the ropes, but if you had, to these skis might be your best chance for survival.
