Review: Altai Kom Skis

In the old days, skiing was less about exercise and more about moving across the frozen landscape in the most efficient and capable manner possible. Which is the inspiration behind the Altai Kom, a cool cross-country ski that's meant not for the track or the trail, but for wandering the winter woods, and having fun while doing it.

Meant to meander, the Kom is short and wide, for stability and maneuverability. It's also lightweight, lending itself to long tours with minimal exertion. Paired with a classic cable binding and leather tele boots, the Kom kicks & glides through field and forest alike, allowing you to cover lots of ground without wearing yourself out. This will of course come at the cost of confidence on steep powder descents, not to mention hardpack of any grade; but with a little practice, you'll keep yourself upright in all terrain.

With fish-scales rather than skins underfoot, think Fawn Pass to Bighorn Pass, rather than Bear Canyon to Mount Ellis: a little bit of everything, with less up-then-down and more continuous cross-country. Fewer figure-eights with your ski partner, and more pointing out wildlife and other winter sights. The Kom can handle vert, sure, but it shines in classic adventure touring. Which goes way back, and is still a cool way to experience winter.
