Review: Alpacas of Montana Socks

Think merino wool is soft? Then you’ll be blown away by alpaca wool. As far as socks go, they don’t get more comfortable than the Extra Cushion Alpaca Boot Socks ($34) from Alpacas of Montana. A mid-calf fit provides good protection, while a thick weave offers plenty of warmth. So much warmth, in fact, that I wouldn’t want to wear them in my hiking or hunting boots when on the move. But if I were sitting a meadow on a cold morning, or shoveling the driveway, they’d fit the bill. Like all alpaca garments, they’re naturally antimicrobial and moisture wicking, providing another level of comfort—for both you and your tentmates, should you dare take the socks off. But trust me, you won’t want to. —Eli Fournier

These days, there is specialized apparel for every activity out there. The Alpacas of Montana Ski and Snowboard Socks ($37) are no exception, and they’re my new go-to for long days on the slopes. Comfortable, durable, and warm, they provide everything I want in a ski sock. They’re quite a bit thicker than synthetic socks, but the moisture-wicking ability of alpaca wool put to rest all my concerns over the thicker weave. Despite the extra thickness—which provides more warmth—my feet never get sweaty during intense activity, nor do they get cold on the chair ride back up the mountain. I like ’em so much that I’ll even snag a dirty pair out of my clothes pile instead of going with a clean alternative. Throw in the fact that Alpacas of Montana is a local brand here in town, and there’s not much more that could be asked for. —Peter Moreno

Both socks, along with a variety of other athletic and casual varieties, are available at alpacasofmontana.com, or at the company's storefront off S. Cottonwood Rd.
