Settling in to read Montana Chillers (Farcountry Press, $13) before bed is a mistake. I was hearing things down the hall of our house after the first story. The most disturbing part about Ellen Baumler’s collection of ghost stories is that they’re all true—local places, people, and events provide the grisly backdrop. My favorite was the story about the Meade Hotel—the day before, I’d visited the town of Bannock and stood in the very spot I was reading about. According to Baumler (and numerous witnesses), ghosts still haunt the Meade building and to top it off, the story ends with an actual photo of strange floating orbs surrounding this once-famous hotel. This book is a supernatural read for locals who want to know every gory detail.
