Book: Axe In Hand

Axe in Hand book

It may seem strange, taking advice about axes and wood-chopping from a blond-haired 20-something, but Axe in Hand: A Woodchopper’s Guide to Blades, Wood & Fire (Cool Springs Press, $25) is a good book. Author Nicole Coenen knows her stuff, no burly physique, billowing beard, or red flannel required (she ain’t exactly dainty, though; girl’s got some guns on ’er). Although Coenen didn’t grow up with an axe in her hand, she’s a natural, as both her technique and social-media stardom can attest. With sections on history, technique, problem-solving, and maintenance, Axe in Hand covers it all, clearly and completely. Additional chapters delve into the practical side: felling trees and stacking wood (yes, there are right and wrong ways). Abundant full-color photographs enhance the reading experience, especially on rainy days when you can’t go outside and swing an axe yourself.
