Sleddin' Time

Southwest Montana's top trails.

While this winter hasn’t provided the overhead powder that we spend summers dreaming about, snow coverage in southwest Montana actually isn’t that far below average, and we all know that all it would take is a storm or two to catch up. With temps dipping back below freezing and a relatively safe snowpack, now is a perfect time to hit the trails for some snowmobile fun. As always, check current avalanche and weather reports, just to be safe. Here are some area rides worth checking out.

Big Sky
For experienced riders, the partially groomed Big Sky Snowmobile Trail takes you nearly 50 miles from Taylor’s Fork to West Yellowstone. It’s remote and technical terrain, so don’t go it alone and be prepared.

West Yellowstone
Two Top Mountain Trail is a 30-mile loop that begins and ends in West, offering a variety of terrain. On this groomed trail, sledheads can connect to a myriad of other trails and travel farther south.

Paradise Valley
Located 28 miles south of Livingston, Mill Creek Trail offers nearly 12 miles of marked and groomed trails from Mill Creek Station, providing views of Paradise Valley and the Absaroka Mountains

Island Park, ID
With a 500-mile trail system, there’s a lot to choose from in Island Park. Try Bitch Creek Trail for spectacular scenery. This remote route travels 11 miles south of Jack Ass Loop at Junction 101. Once across Bitch Creek, the trail takes you south from Fremont into Teton County and into neighboring trail systems. The terrain is primarily flat and good for inexperienced riders.
