Summer Events in West Yellowstone

A short drive down the road will take you to West Yellowstone, where a host of events and activities await you this summer.

The Wild West Yellowstone rodeo kicks off June 18-20 and keeps going on several subsequent weekends. Bareback, team roping, saddle bronc, and bull riding are all part of the action. Check out yellowstonerodeo.com for a schedule and more info.

The annual Janet Clarkson Memorial Triathlon is June 20, and it includes a 1000-meter swim, 13.1-mile bike ride, and a 4.3-mile run. Proceeds benefit the West Yellowstone School's scholarship fund and the American Cancer Society. The race honors marathoner and triathlete Janet Clarkson, who passed away at age 37 from Ewing's Sarcoma in 2001.

Endurance junkies will also like the 12th annual Mountain Bike Biathlon on June 27-28. The race includes a 7.5k mountain bike race and two shooting bouts. There are two divisions, one of which is for novices, so don't be shy. Call Sara at 599-4464 or visit westyellowstonechamber.com for more info.

West is also a great place to spend the Fourth of July. Fireworks start at 10 pm, but you'll want to get there in the morning and make a day of it. The Big Brothers & Big Sisters of West Yellowstone opens its annual rummage sale at 9 am at Town Park, and the West Yellowstone Fire Department hosts a barbecue in the chamber of commerce parking lot from 11 to 2. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy the free music going on in the Town Park until the parade starts at 5:30 pm. The motorcycle poker ride and the pig roast round out the festivities from 6 to 8 pm.

The week of August 14 hosts West Yellowstone's Crazy Days, but it also marks the 50th anniversary of the Hebgen Lake earthquake, one of the most powerful quakes in the state's history. Head out to the lake to hear lectures from geologists, rescue workers, and survivors. A smokejumper demonstration is also scheduled for August 16. The full schedule is at westyellowstonechamber.com.

This summer marks the end of the West Yellowstone painted buffalo herd, a group of 34 life-size fiberglass cow buffaloes painted by 25 artists from four states. The buffalo have "roamed" West for three years now, and on August 29 they'll be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The herd gathers one last time on August 20-26 at the Yellowstone Historic Center and the Grand Hall at the Holiday Inn in West. One will be raffled off.

The famous Pineneedle Stampede 8k and 10k races are on September 5. This is one of the most scenic race courses in the United States, and runners don't have to compete with traffic on the course. Register at active.com.
