SurfEars 4.0 ($60) are one of those pieces of gear you don't think you need until you've spent a few hours getting blasted by cold water. Designed to keep water out while still allowing you to hear conversations, river signals, and approaching hazards, they quickly prove their value.

From a whitewater kayaking perspective, that's the real advantage. Traditional earplugs can leave you feeling disconnected from your surroundings, while SurfEars allow enough sound transmission to communicate with your crew and stay playful on the river.

The fit is secure, even through repeated failed attempts at a kickflip and unexpected visits to crunchy holes. Multiple sizing options make it easy to dial in a comfortable fit. Lucky for me, the fit was spot on right out of the box.
