Review: Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody

The Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody ($299), is one of those pieces of gear that quietly earns a permanent spot in my pack—and usually my car, too. In Montana, a chilly morning can turn into a sunny afternoon fast, making a lightweight, warm layer a necessity. Whether hiking the trails, wandering down Main Street, or standing around a chilly baseball field, it’s the jacket I grab when a bulky coat feels excessive, but a sweatshirt clearly isn’t going to cut it.

For such a lightweight jacket, the Nano Puff packs some serious warmth. The internal zippered chest pocket doubles as a stuff sack, so when the sun finally decides to show up and the temperatures rise, it packs down neatly. The feminine cut and relaxed-slim fit creates a flattering shape without sacrificing room for a base layer underneath. It’s a comfortable and compact multipurpose mid layer.

Wind and water resistant, the Nano Puff does a surprisingly good job of taking the edge off a cold Montana breeze. The hood is especially handy when the weather turns sideways. The adjustable hem cinches tight to help lock in warmth and keep the elements from sneaking up your back.

For me, this is truly an all-season jacket. I wear it on its own from spring through fall, layer it under a heavier jacket during the winter, and reach for it anytime a bulky coat feels like overkill. It transitions effortlessly from trail to town and somehow manages to look good doing both. Lightweight, durable, warm and versatile, the Nano Puff is the kind of reliable, quality piece you buy knowing you’ll reach for it again and again—and probably wonder how you ever lived without it.
