Yellowstone River is one of southwest Montana’s best known blue ribbon trout streams, originating in the high country of Yellowstone Park. A float down the Yellowstone from Gardner starts in faster moving water before entering Yankee Jim canyon. During spring high water flows, Yankee Jim can be harder to navigate than it first appears as waves bounce off the narrower banks and whirlpools form and disappear. Once out of the restrictive Yankee Jim, the river slows and splits in to braids as it meanders north. Due to its proximity to Bozeman & Livingston, as well as the excellent white & trout fishing this section of the river sees heavy use.
