Whether I’m clambering over coarse granite in Pipestone or speed-stepping rock on the steep way up the M, I need a shoe that grabs. Alas, my heavy-lugged hikers, designed for dirt and other soft surfaces, invariably slip on smooth rock, especially on the downhill. Which is why I now wear the Sticky Rock from Garmont, an approach shoe that’s predictably stiff and grippy for bouldering, but soft and comfy enough for hiking, too. The Vibram Round Approach outsole smears on stone like lizard feet, but offers enough lugs to hold up on the trail; it even feels fine on pedals. Of particular note is the heel-lock feature that keeps the entire foot tight in the shoe, without discomfort. Throw in light weight and this shoe will do it all—except look cool around town, as the neon-green heel-stripe complements no ensemble. Available at Schnee's. $145; garmontnorthamerica.com
