The first thing I noticed about the X-Alp Enduro IV shoes from Pearl Izumi was how comfortable they were; they felt more like trail runners than mountain-biking shoes. This comfort doesn’t comprise pedaling performance, however. They’re stiff enough to transfer power efficiently from my pedal stroke to my bike, and made clearing obstacles on the climb a breeze. For added comfort, the X-Alp Enduro IV has a three-strap closure system that’s so easy to use I can adjust tightness and points of pressure while riding. The bottom two straps are Velcro and the top strap has a ratchet system, making the fit customizable. This is also great when you’re off the bike hiking, as their lugged-out soles don’t slip and slide on loose rock, wet roots, or during stream crossings. I did notice a fair amount of cleat-strike, but it didn’t affect my traction at all. If you’re looking for an all-mountain shoe that’s as functional on the bike as off it, the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro IV is a great choice. Available at Grizzly Outfitters. $110; pearlizumi.com.
