In one compact design, the Backcountry Bomb allows you to cut cornices quickly and efficiently. This ingeniously simple backcountry tool—which is basically a long, thin cable with two handles—lassos and cuts overhanging cornices much easier then a snow saw or rope, especially on larger chunks of snow. Cornices commonly break off further back than where you think they will, so whenever possible, stand on solid ground and even rope up if necessary. Dropping a cornice should never be a persons’ only means of assessing whether or not a slide may occur on a given slope. Just like digging a pit, or staying up-to-date on past weather and avalanche danger, these are all just pieces to a larger puzzle in determining whether or not a particular slope is safe to ski. $30; backcountrybomb.com.
