If you like the idea of a backcountry bike but usually end up carrying way too much in your pack for a comfortable ride, check out the Ibex Bike Trailer from BOB. This baby is about as burly as it gets, with a 70-pound weight capacity (no exaggeration here; I pushed it to 80 with no problems), adjustable suspension, and a quick-release attachment system. The Ibex has a surprisingly smooth ride, and with the optional dry bag there’s no worry about your gear getting soaked on the ride in. I found the Ibex to be equally useful around town, both for groceries and for hauling my dog around in heavy traffic. The only problem I encountered was during assembly, when I struggled to align the wheel mount to the trailer platform itself—but that super-tight fit translated into greater stability during the ride. All in all, I’m one happy biker—with the Ibex’s help, I’ve finally severed the umbilical cord to my car. $370; bobtrailers.com.
