Review: Big Sky Rod Box
Over the years, many attempts have been made to keep rods fishin’-ready, while still safe from common catastrophes. PVC, rubber-snubbers, magnets, and all other manner of safe-keeping have been contrived to protect these pricey pieces of equipment. Recently, a group of Bozeman fishermen and engineers decided to solve the issue once and for all with the Big Sky Rod Box. Constructed from 18-gauge powder-coated steel, this rooftop rod locker is a safe, secure alternative to plastic or aluminum tube-type carriers. The Big Sky Rod Box is capable of carrying up to four 9.5-foot rods, fully rigged and tangle-free. A standout bonus is that the rods are set into durable, closed-cell foam inserts inside the box, rather than being stuffed into a tube. Considering the price range of most good fishing gear, this box is a great investment for the serious angler. I had no trepidations about leaving several thousand dollars worth of rods and reels in a Missoula parking lot overnight. Retail price includes most standard installations; custom sizes and colors are available upon request. Available at Big Sky Toppers and RO Drift Boats. $460; flyrodbox.com
