Review: SurfEars 4.0
SurfEars 4.0 ($60) are one of those things you don't think you need until you've spent a few hours getting blasted by cold water. Designed to keep water out while still allowing you to hear conversations, river signals, and approaching hazards, SurfEars quickly prove their value.
From a whitewater-kayaking perspective, that's the real advantage. Traditional earplugs can leave you feeling disconnected from your surroundings, while SurfEars allow enough sound transmission to communicate with your crew and stay playful on the river.
The fit is secure, even through repeated failed attempts at a kickflip and unexpected visits to crunchy holes. Multiple sizing options make it easy to dial in a comfortable fit. Lucky for me, the fit was spot-on right out of the box.
For paddlers looking to reduce coldwater exposure and those tired of walking around with a pint of river water in their skulls all season, SurfEars are an easy recommendation. They aren't the cheapest ear protection on the market, but the comfort, retention, and ability to hear what's happening around you make them well worth the investment. Available at surfears.com.
