The burly Five Ten Exum Guide shoe is like armor for your feet. Hiking through muddy spring conditions and over slippery rocks, these shoes not only protected my feet, but they also provided lots of durable support, a practically ankle-twist-resistant mid-cut, water-resistance all around, and friction in the Stealth rubber soles. The molded heel cage provides even more support, and the EVA cushioning inside is the cherry on top. This shoe is made for alpinists, rugged mountaineers, and peakbaggers, and it’s built for strap-on crampons. My only complaint is that the Exum Guide has too much going on—I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wear them out. Available at Northern Lights. $165; fiveten.com.
