Learning new skills in a fun environment

We offer a variety of clinics for different skill and interest levels. Participants must provide their own mountain bike, helmet, water and snack. A limited number of rental bikes are available for clinics (reservation required). For our women’s only clinics we welcome all women — transgender and cisgender — as well as nonbinary people who identify with the women’s community.

Intro Clinic

Introduction to Mountain Biking Clinic

New to mountain biking and not sure where to start? Join us for a clinic focused on honing in on the very basics of mountain biking. We will demystify your bike’s components and share simple maintenance practices, discuss the unspoken rules of mountain bike behavior, and practice foundational bike skills to get you started on your new journey as a mountain biker! We utilize a growth mindset to build confidence and help you find flow on your bike.

This clinic is designed for those who:

  • Recently purchased a mountain bike

  • Have never ridden a bike on singletrack trail

  • Are unfamiliar with the different components on their bike

Skill Focus:

  • Basic bike components, how to use and maintain them

  • Descending body position

  • Operation of controls

  • Climbing body position

  • Bike-body separation

  • Trail scanning

Fundamentals Clinic

Mountain Biking Fundamentals I Clinic

This clinic is designed for emerging trail riders who may have limited experience riding singletrack, or for more experienced riders looking to solidify their basics. We will hone in on the foundational skills of mountain biking to find more flow and comfort riding singletrack. Emphasis will be placed on body position, discovering our range of motion on our bikes, braking, climbing and shifting, and an introduction to cornering.

This clinic can be paired with our Fundamentals II Clinic, or stand alone. Skills learned in Fundamentals I progress well into Fundamentals II. For those looking for more advanced and dynamic skill work, you may want to step ahead to Fundamentals II.

This clinic is designed for those who:

  • Have prior experience riding non-technical singletrack

  • Have a basic understanding of their bike and how to use each component; shifting, braking

  • Have had little to no formal instruction on a mountain bike

Skill Focus:

  • Bike-body separation and range of motion

  • Operation of controls

  • Descending body position

  • Climbing body position

  • Trail scanning

  • Braking

Mountain Biking Fundamentals II Clinic

This clinic is designed for emerging trail riders who may have limited experience riding singletrack, or for more experienced riders looking to solidify their fundamentals. We will hone in on the foundational skills of mountain biking to find more flow and comfort riding singletrack. Emphasis will be placed on being more dynamic with our bikes, with movements such as wheel lifts, advanced braking, ratcheting and balance skills, and confident cornering.

This clinic can be paired with our Fundamentals I Clinic as a progression. This clinic is more focused on more advanced and dynamic skill work. Fundamentals II will take the next steps in building your confidence as a rider.

This clinic is designed for those who:

  • Are comfortable on basic singletrack

  • Have a basic understanding of their bike, and moving around the bike depending on terrain

  • Are looking to become more dynamic on their bike

Skill Focus:

  • Wheel lifts

  • Advanced braking

  • Balance skills

  • Cornering foundations, downhill, and switchbacks

  • Thursday, July 20th; 6:00-8:00pm

  • Thursday, August 10th; 6:00-8:00pm – Women’s Clinic*

  • Wednesday, September 20; 5:00-7:00pm

  • Thursday, September 21; 5:00-7:00pm

Weekend Warrior Clinic

Take your riding to the next level with one of our certified BICP and PMBIA instructors. This is a full and fun weekend of skill progression. Two 6-hour days help you develop more finesse on your bike and gain the skill and confidence needed to have more flow and fun on your rides - up steep climbs, along skinnies, over rocky and rooty terrain, around corners and off small drops!

Clinic Structure

Saturday will build you up from your fundamentals —body positioning, balance, braking, and cornering. Sunday will include dynamic skills like wheel lifts, navigating obstacles, and drops. Both days include guided practice and fun out on the trails.

This clinic is designed for those who:

  • Have 2+ years of riding experience and are comfortable riding a variety of trails

  • Have the basic skills down involved in riding relatively consistent terrain (e.g., basic riding body position, braking, shifting, etc.)

  • Are intermediate riders and those who are ready to move beyond their beginner skill set

Skill Focus:

  • Body position, bike-body separation, and range of motion

  • Speed management and brake timing

  • Balance skills

  • Cornering

  • Wheel lifts

  • Drop technique‍

  • Saturday, July 15-Sunday, July 16; 9:00am-3:00pm — Women’s Clinic*

  • Saturday, July 22-Sunday, July 23; 9:00am-3:00pm

Cornering Series

This clinic is intended for intermediate to experienced riders with solid foundational skills who are looking to improve their ability to ride corners on varying terrain. We will break down the techniques involved in ascending and descending a variety of corners — including flat turns, berms, switchbacks, and tight turns.

This is a great next step for riders who complete our Fundamentals II clinic.

This series is designed for those who:

  • Have 2+ years of riding experience and are comfortable riding a variety of trails

  • Have basic skills involved in riding (e.g., basic riding body position, braking, shifting, etc.)

Skill Focus:

  • Body position

  • Trail scanning

  • Bike-body separation and range of motion

  • Steering and leaning

  • Balance

  • Pressure control

  • Downhill flat corner techniques

  • Downhill bermed corner techniques

  • Switchback techniques

Series Dates:

This is a 2 part series — we will meet for two 2-hour sessions over two weeks.

  • Thursday Series: Thursdays at 6:00-8:00pm; July 13th & 20th

  • Monday Series: Mondays at 6:00-8:00pm; July 17th & 24th

  • Tuesday Series: Tuesdays at 5:00-7:00pm; September 12th & 19th

Cost:

Jump & Drop Series

Looking to find more confidence and technique in the air? Want to try a jump or drop for the first time? This clinic is designed for intermediate to advanced riders to learn how to jump and drop safely. We start on the ground and work riders up to getting some air time, whether it be two inches or two feet off the ground.

This is a great next step for riders who complete our Fundamentals II clinic.

This series is designed for those who:

  • Have 2+ years of riding experience and are comfortable riding a variety of trails

  • Have the basic skills down involved in trail riding (e.g., neutral/ready position, moving the body around the bike depending on uphill, downhill, and corners, etc.)

Skill Focus:

  • Body positioning

  • Wheel lifts

  • Foundational movements of jumping and dropping

  • Speed management

  • Jumping and dropping!

Series Dates:

This is a 2 part series — we will meet for two 2-hour sessions over two weeks.

  • Early Summer Series: Mondays at 6:00-8:00pm; June 26th & July 3rd

  • August Series: Thursdays at 6:00-8:00pm; August 3rd & 10th

Cost:

  • $140: no rentals

  • $200: rentals included

Bozeman Youth Cycling Parent Clinic

Trying to keep up with your kids on bikes? Join us for parent clinics during BYC sessions!  (Non-BYC folks are also welcome — invite your friends!)  Sign up for as many of these clinics as you would like! They will be held during the time your kids are riding with their BYC crew at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.

We will demystify bike culture, review trail etiquette and vocabulary, and of course practice foundational bike skills to progress you on your journey as a mountain biker. Adults can have fun riding and learning together too!

Private Lessons

For kids 10 and up and adults who prefer one-on-one instruction to advance their skills and confidence, we offer private mountain biking lessons. We offer 1-hour lessons geared toward beginner and emerging riders and 2-hour lessons for more intermediate-level riders, or those looking to get more time on the trails. Private lessons are available mid-week and on weekends and can accommodate up to two.

Private Lesson - 1 Hour

Let's get you ready to ride! Our 60-minute lesson will help you get comfortable on your bike and prepared for more flow on the trail. We will start on the flats and make it out on the trail and to the skills park, if that matches your goals for the session.

Cost:

  • $75 for the first person, $50 for the second person: no rentals

  • $105 for the first person, $80 for the second person: rentals included

Private Lesson - 2 Hour

Let's progress your trail riding! This 2-hour lesson will help you advance your technique. Lessons are flexible to riders’ goals and skill. We will hit the trails and work on skill progressions and skills application with the aim to help to reach your mountain biking goals.

Cost:

  • $130 for the first person, $50 for the second person: no rentals

  • $160 for the first person, $80 for the second person: rentals included

Guided Trail Tour

Up to four guests will enjoy 3 hours of guided mountain biking at Crosscut, led by one of our certified MTB instructors. The instructor will select the terrain and trails based on your skill set and your mountain biking goals. Riding distance can range between 5 and 20 miles. Bring your own bike(s) or use our high performance, full suspension mountain bikes.

Lessons will begin in our base area with a bike safety check and review of fundamental skills, then we will set off on the ride to explore the beautiful trails and landscape of the Bridger Mountains. If it meets your goals for your session, our instructors will help you improve your skills and try more challenging terrain during your tour.

Included in Trail Tour Package:

  • Mountain Bike Rental(s) for the day, until 5:00pm

  • Mountain Bike Instructor for 3 hours

Cost:

  • $210 for up to 4 people

Cancellations

Clinics & Series

Cancellations made 10 days prior to the program start date will receive a refund minus a $50 processing fee. Cancellations within 9 days of the program start date will not receive a refund. Participants with special circumstances are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible to find shared solutions. If you need to cancel, please email reservations@crosscutmt.org.

Private Lessons, Trail Tours, & Rentals

Cancellations more than 48 hours in advance of your lesson receive full credit to reschedule or a refund minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations within 48 hours of the lesson will not receive credit or a refund. If you need to cancel, please email our Mountain Bike Manager, Reid Short, at reid@crosscutmt.org.
