Having spent most of the past decade hiking in sandals, I was a bit skeptical of a trekking shoe. I thought they’d be heavy, stiff, and cause damage to my feet. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised, as the Phoenix GTX Lo from LOWA definitely are not my mother’s hiking shoes. They’re comfortable and fashionable enough for everyday wear and surprisingly light at 830 grams. I’d been told that they were a bit soft for trekking shoes, but I found them completely stable. The tread handled snow, ice, loose rock, and mud like a boss, and the Gore-Tex lining kept my feet dry. Best of all, they’re extremely comfortable as they were created for a female foot and are not simply a small-sized male shoe. Available at Schnee’s and Timber Trails. $200; lowaboots.com
