How Far Will You Go Outside Bozeman

After more than a decade of adventurous Bozemanites traversing the globe, O/B in-hand, there’s precious little we haven’t seen. From Himalayan peaks to the ocean floor, Antarctica to the Arctic Circle, the Sahara desert to the jungles of South America, readers have taken Outside Bozeman darn near everywhere imaginable. But while the world may be finite, creativity and inspiration are not—which is why we keep receiving excellent images every issue. Thanks for all the great photos, people, and keep ‘em coming. As always, “far” can be figurative, so get weird, get wacky, get wild—just get a photo and send it in.

Winter 2018-19 Winner:

Michael Wallner & crew, Arctic Ocean

How Far Will You Go Outside Bozeman

"Few people in this world will leave Montana in August to travel 500 miles from the North Pole to fish for spawning Arctic char in 33-degree water with a five-degree air temperature in the Arctic Ocean. Strangely, my grandpa, Robert T. Wallner, considered this dream for many years. At his request, and in his memory, we embarked on a journey to the end of the Earth, pushing ourselves and our gear to the limits. After a two-hour floatplane ride and six commercial flights to get home, we all walked away with an important lesson that many (even my grandpa) have failed to learn. Dreaming about adventures provides excitement, endorphins, and even the what-if possibility when daydreaming at the office. On the other hand, venturing on a dream trip provides once-in-a-lifetime memories that are irreplaceable, especially when that adventure is in the memory of another." —Michael Wallner
