In preparation for my first season on the Ridge, I needed a solid snowboard-specific pack that could also carry my backcountry gear. Research led me to the Ridge SB Pack from J.A. Gear. Jim Schipf and his wife Annette (hence the J.A.) have been producing custom outdoor gear in Bozeman for nearly 30 years, so when I asked Jim to craft a snowboard-friendly version of his legendary Ridge Pack, he had one sewn up for me in just a few days. The result is a thoughtfully designed pack with a tough Cordura exterior, featuring minimalistic loops and straps for quickly attaching a snowboard or skis. Inside, the Ridge SB features an inner zipper pocket, loops for securing a shovel handle and avalanche probe, and enough room left over to hold a full day’s worth of gear, including food and water. The most impressive quality is that even fully loaded, this low-profile pack only extends about three inches from my back, allowing me to wear it comfortably on the chairlift. Available at Summit Bike & Ski. $115; jagear.biz.
